After Lt. Hugh William Wellons was killed in Vietnam in 1966, the Army shipped home his crate of personal and military effects that the family left relatively undisturbed for more than 40 years. Hugh’s sister, Caroline Parsons, who still lives in the Cumberland County residence where her and Hugh’s mother and grandmother were born, allowed the staff at the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex to examine the crate and its contents. This exhibit displays the contents of Hugh’s crate and tells his story. Exhibit will be on display 11/4 – 11/12.

Dr. Cyndi Briggs has spent several years collecting veterans’ stories and preserving them for future generations. Her presentation includes many stories that allowed her to learn about Vietnam veterans. The daughter and granddaughter of Army veterans, Dr. Briggs became interested in the effects of war on people who served after discovering her deceased grandfather’s World War II photos and memorabilia in 2014. This interest led to an oral history project that grew from one conversation with a World War II veteran to (currently) 80 interviews with WWII, Korean, and Vietnam era vets. Her discussion starts at 2pm.
